Big Ass Pumpkin Drops — no-bake pumpkin peanut butter treats for big dogs

From Dog Mom's Kitchen 🐾 (Dog Dad edition)

Full disclosure: Apryll is on vacation. A real one, a week long, well earned after the chaos I put her through getting the Big Ass Dog Summit across the finish line. Which means the kitchen — and this section — belongs to me and the dogs until she gets back. Pray for all of us.

She did not leave me unsupervised without a plan. This is the recipe she picked for the handoff: three ingredients, zero baking, and a margin of error wide enough that even I can't wreck it. It also happens to be the first pumpkin recipe of the season, because September is when the big ones get their weather back — cooler mornings, longer walks, actual outside time. Fuel accordingly.

  • ⏱ Prep ~10 min
  • ❄ Chill 30 min
  • 🦴 Makes ~20 big-dog drops
  • 🔥 Baking skill required: none

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain canned pumpkin purée — NOT pumpkin pie filling
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter — xylitol-free, check the label
  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats (plus more if the mix feels sticky)

Method

  1. Stir the pumpkin and peanut butter together in a big bowl until smooth. This is the hard part. It is not hard.
  2. Mix in the oats a half-cup at a time until it holds together like cookie dough.
  3. Roll into balls sized for your beast — golf ball for the true giants, smaller for the merely large.
  4. Chill 30 minutes on a tray. Done. Even I did not mess this up.

The fall upgrade

Want to look fancier than you are? Roll the finished drops in a little extra crushed oats, or press a blueberry into the top of each one. When Apryll gets home, tell her presentation was your idea. I certainly will.

Tips & swaps

Peanut allergy in the pack? Swap the peanut butter for plain unsweetened almond butter (also xylitol-free) or simply use more pumpkin and add a spoonful of honey — softer drops, same enthusiasm.

Portion to your dog. Treats stay treats — roughly 10% of your dog's daily calories, even when Dad's in charge and feeling generous.

Storage. Airtight container in the fridge for a week, or freeze for a month. They will not last either way.

A quick safety note: Plain pumpkin purée only — pumpkin pie filling has sugar and spices your dog doesn't need (nutmeg is a no). Read the peanut butter label for xylitol (sometimes called "birch sugar"), which is toxic to dogs. Skip grapes and raisins entirely. Allergies, sensitive gut, or a health condition? Run new treats past your vet first.

That's the whole thing

Three ingredients, no oven, and two dogs who have decided Dad's kitchen week is the best week of their lives. Make a batch, take a picture before they inhale it, and tag us — I need the evidence that this section survived my shift. Dog Mom's Kitchen returns to qualified management in October.
