There Is No Industry Standard for XXL
One brand's 3XL is another brand's large. A harness labeled "extra large" might be built for a 70 lb Labrador or a 140 lb Cane Corso, and nothing on the label tells you which. That is why people order, wait, and find out it will not close around the dog's chest.
So we publish the actual measurements. Every size below is a real chest circumference in inches, not a label you have to trust.
Every Size, With the Real Numbers
- M — chest 23–30 in, dogs 30–55 lbs. Smaller working dogs.
- L — chest 26–33.5 in, dogs 50–70 lbs. What most brands call extra large.
- XL — chest 28–37.5 in, dogs 65–95 lbs. Great Pyrenees, Dogue de Bordeaux.
- 2XL — chest 32.25–42.25 in, dogs 88–155 lbs. Cane Corso, Anatolian Shepherd, Newfoundland.
- 3XL — chest 37.5–54.25 in, dogs 155–198 lbs. Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Irish Wolfhound.
- 4XL — chest 41.75–58.25 in, dogs 176–221 lbs. English Mastiff, the largest Danes and Saints.
Breed names are starting points, not guarantees. Measure the dog.
Why Weight-Based Sizing Fails Big Dogs
Most size charts lead with weight because weight is the number owners know. It is also the number that tells you the least.
Look at the overlap above. 2XL covers 88–155 lbs, 3XL covers 155–198, 4XL covers 176–221. A 180 lb dog appears in two of those three rows. Weight alone cannot resolve it. Chest circumference can, every time.
Two Great Danes can both weigh 140 lbs and wear harnesses two sizes apart — one tall and narrow through the ribcage, the other barrel-chested and shorter.
How to Measure, in Three Steps
- Get your dog standing. Not sitting, not lying down. Standing changes the ribcage measurement by a surprising amount.
- Find the widest point of the chest, just behind the front legs. That is girth — not the belly, not the neck.
- Wrap a soft tape snugly, then add two fingers of slack. No tape? Use string, mark it, lay it against a ruler.
Between two sizes? Size up. Every harness here has adjustment range built in. Taking up slack on a slightly large harness is easy; making a slightly small one fit is impossible. Doubly true under two years old — giant breeds are not finished growing at a year, whatever the scale says.
Which of the Two You Want
Both run the same fit, so if you already own one, order the same size in the other.
- Big Ass Harness — six sizes M through 4XL, four colors, reinforced ring attachment, wide straps, reflective webbing, grab handle across the back. The right harness for most big dogs on most walks.
- Big Ass Tactical Harness — the heavier tier, XL through 4XL. Two and a half pounds, every latch metal, two metal D-rings (top for walking, chest for front-clip handling), padded shoulder handle, full velcro panels for patches. For serious pullers, working dogs, and handlers who want the front attachment point.
The Tactical is not a fix for a flaw in the standard harness. They are two tiers for two jobs.
If Your Last Harness Broke
Check which part went. A buckle means plastic hardware under a load it was never rated for. Stitching at the D-ring means the attachment was not reinforced. Webbing means abrasion you did not catch in time. All three point at a harness built for a smaller dog and relabeled.
A genuinely bigger harness needs wider webbing and stronger hardware, not just longer straps. Above roughly 80 lbs, every load-bearing latch should be metal — not because plastic always breaks, but because when it does it breaks suddenly and completely, with no warning stage.

What size is a 4XL dog harness?
Ours fits a chest from 41.75 to 58.25 inches, for dogs roughly 176 to 221 lbs. There is no universal 4XL, so always check the chest measurement rather than trusting the label.
What size harness does a Great Dane need?
Most adult Danes land in 3XL, with the largest males in 4XL. Measure the chest behind the front legs rather than guessing from weight.
Is XXL big enough for a Mastiff?
Usually not. A typical XXL tops out around a 42 inch chest, and an adult English Mastiff is frequently past that. 3XL or 4XL is the honest answer for the breed.
Is there anything larger than 4XL?
Not in our range, and 58 inches covers the overwhelming majority of adult giant breeds. If your dog measures past that, email us before ordering rather than buying and hoping.
The harness fits the ribcage but gaps at the neck. Wrong size?
Probably the wrong shape rather than the wrong size. Deep-chested breeds are built like a barrel turned on edge, and a harness cut on a broad shallow-chested dog's proportions will chafe no matter what size you buy. Sizing down makes the ribcage too tight without closing the gap.
How often should I re-measure a growing dog?
Every two months until about 18 months, and once more at two years. A Dane puppy will change harness size two or three times in its first year.
